Introductions

My name is Sarah and this is my blog for SAF in spring 2008. My running theme for the semester is modern day sacrifices to modern day gods.

Throughout history and around the world animals have been made sacrifices to appease gods and invoke prosperity. In the modern Western world we have tried to distance ourselves from this practice, calling it cruel and barbaric. Even the meat we consume comes hermetically sealed and perfect, in no way representing the frolicking creature it once was. Despite our efforts to avoid the blood of animals on our hands it is all around us. Roadkill, the insects drawn to our lights, birds colliding with windows, and all manner of creatures picked apart to improve our knowledge are the modern day sacrifices. We spill their blood to appease the gods of asphalt, steel and progress. I want my work for the semester to make people think about this sometimes graphic truth and have a greater respect for the death we pass every day without thought.
